BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Sumer was the southernmost region of ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq and Kuwait) which is generally considered the cradle of civilization. The name comes from Akkadian, the language of the north of Mesopotamia, and means “land of the civilized kings”. Sumer is thought to be the first civilization. The Sumerian civilization emerged at the lower parts of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers about 4000 B.C. This is where agriculture, written language, cities, and many inventions that are still used today were originated and invented.
